Growing up...music became a best friend to me. And, while listening to all types of music and seeing different expression of it...I've often seen the DJ mixing and scratching records like there was no tomorrow. The DJ is usually running the show. And, the show is literally in the DJ's hands. With that being said...I've always loved the role that the "DJ" plays in music. The unique ways that they remix or shape a record is amazing to me. I love the different scratching techniques that are involved. The scratching & mixing is mind blowing to me. And, I can honestly say that I like what a REAL DJ does!

On this day, February 3rd, 1870, the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was granted. The 15th Amendment gave black men the right to vote. Before black men had become able to exercise their right to vote, they were given literacy tests, poll taxes and other obstacles to derail their right. According to The Library of Congress, "Although ratified on February 3, 1870, the promise of the 15th Amendment would not be fully realized for almost a century." It wasn't until 1965 when the Voting Rights Act had been put into play. This rightous act allowed many African Americans to register to vote.

I will be the one to admit that from time to time when something unplanned happens or does not happen, I end up expressing an excuse. (Wow! I just unknowingly made an excuse for myself! Smh.) This is an ugly habit that has become a problem in our society. It is seemingly an easy way out of and after certain situations. We feel that it is a way to get away from things that could have been dealt with or handled at that time. We come in at the wrong time after the right time in hopes of making up for that time with AN EXCUSE. As I'm thinking about it right now...it's not the smartest thing to do! There's only one thing for all of us to do from now on. Handle your business and no excuses can be made! On this topic, I will say "us" because everyone of us is accountable for our own actions. We need to step up and be better...because if we do what's needed to be done now, there's no need for an excuse later!

Let me cut to the chase. I'm about to address something...I try hard to not address anything negative. But, this will be my first and last time doing it...so yeah. This goes out to all the people that I know who are being victimized & put down by this negative energy that's going around. Don't feed into the negativity. Giving into it will give it longevity... I absolutely know that it is hard to sit there and allow someone to say or put things out about you. But...the state of ignorance will never change unless you ignore it. Ignore it...it goes away. Eventually, the someone or people behind this will be exposed and this will go away. What's done in the dark will come to light! And! All I've got to say is that...GOD DON'T PLAY!!! Like really. The computer that's protecting people's identities right now won't protect them later on when the naked truth comes out. An unknown identity on a computer was this person's last resort in attempts to bring other people down.

People out there...please!!!...understand...I grew up with this lady and it gives me so much JOY & Happiness to know that she just might be back to giving us her greatness. Lauryn Hill means so much in my life. So many times in my life, when it felt like no one was there for me...guess what?...Lauryn Hill was there...her music was there. Seriously. Some of ya'll might be looking at me crazy. But yo...it would take days...maybe weeks to explain how much she means to me.

The group, Santana became the first group & only artists besides Michael Jackson to hit the same record of recieving 8 Grammys in 2000. But, Michael Jackson was the first artist to hit the record. And no one has yet topped this record for one nighters at the Grammys.

Promotional teams/departments at these record labels need to be fired. Artists can only do so much after they've worked hard and created their work. So, these so-called promotional departments need to step up and do their jobs like they used to. Come on, PROMOTE!

But anyways.

Can't wait for this one to drop. FYI-These days I only buy real music...so, if I'm crazy about buying an actual artist's album then it's got to be something great. Seriously.

A Different World, a spinoff of the top-rated The Cosby Show, enjoyed a successful run on NBC from 1987 to 1993. The half-hour, ensemble situation comedy was the first to immerse America in student life at an historically black college. Over the course of its run, the show was also credited with tackling social and political issues rarely explored in television fiction, and opening doors to the television industry for unprecedented numbers of young black actors, writers, producers and directors.

Set at Hillman College, a fictitious, historically black college in the South, the series began by focusing on the college experiences of sophomore Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet)--one of the four daughters featured on The Cosby Show. Denise's attempts to adjust to life away from her family's upper-middle-class nest, and her relationship with her roommates, typically fueled the plot of each episode. One of those roommates, Jaleesa Vinson (Dawnn Lewis), was a young divorcee who considered Denise to be somewhat of a spoiled snob. Another roommate, Maggie Lauten (Marisa Tomei), was one of the few white students on the mostly black campus; for her, as it was for much of the show's audience, Hillman was indeed "a different world." Other recurring characters were added throughout the course of the first season: Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) was a rich Southern belle; Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) was a fast-talking, but studious, New Yorker; Ron Johnson (Darryl Bell) was Dwayne's scheming sidekick; and Walter Oakes (Sinbad) was the dorm director and gym teacher. Bonet and her character, Denise, left the show after the first season due to her real-life pregnancy.

Despite dismal initial reviews, A Different World capitalized off of its Thursday at 8:30 P.M. timeslot on NBC--between The Cosby Show and the ever-popular sitcom, Cheers--and finished second in the ratings its first season. The show and its creative staff were revamped for the second season, leading to third and fourth-place finishes for the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons, respectively. Among black viewers, however, the show consistently ranked first or second throughout most of its run.

As The Hollywood Reporter noted, the series was transformed "from a bland Cosby spinoff into a lively, socially responsible, ensemble situation comedy" only after Debbie Allen took over as producer-director following the first season. Allen, a prominent black dancer, choreographer and actress--and a graduate of historically black Howard University--drew from her college experiences in an effort to accurately reflect in the show the social and political life on black campuses. Moreover, Allen instituted a yearly spring trip to Atlanta where series writers visited two of the nation's leading black colleges, Morehouse and Spelman. During these visits, ideas for several of the episodes emerged from meetings with students and faculty. Symbolizing the show's transformation between the two seasons, perhaps, "the queen of soul," Aretha Franklin, was chosen to replace Phoebe Snow as vocalist for the title theme.

During Allen's tenure, casting changes also transformed the look and feel of the series. Several new characters were added, while certain characters from the first season were featured more prominently in order to add some spice. A cafeteria cook, Mr. Gaines (Lou Meyers), was added to give the series a flavor of southern culture. A hardworking, pre-medical student, Kim Reese (Charnele Brown), was also introduced as a foil for Whitley; she worked for Mr. Gaines in the cafeteria and eventually found herself caught in an on-again, off-again romantic relationship with Ron, one of the original characters. Similarly, Dwayne became entangled in a love-hate relationship with another original character, Whitley. The eventual marriage of Dwayne and Whitley became a major event in the storyline. Other new characters included: Col. Taylor (Glynn Turman), the campus ROTC commander; Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), an environmental activist with metaphysical leanings; Terrence Taylor (Cory Tyler), the son of Col. Taylor; and Lena James (Jada Pinkett), a feisty freshman from the Baltimore projects. Each new season, brought an incoming class of freshman and new featured characters. In short, following the departure of Bonet's character after the first season, the series became a true ensemble situation comedy.

A Different World is also notable for its attempts to explore a range of social and political issues rarely addressed on television--let alone in situation comedies. Featured characters regularly confronted such controversial topics as unplanned pregnancy, date rape, racial discrimination, AIDS, and the 1992 Los Angeles uprisings. Many observers also commended the series for extolling the virtues of higher education for African American youth at a time when many black communities were in crisis.

In the final analysis, A Different World might best be remembered for its cultural vibrancy, its commitment to showcasing black history, music, dance, fashion and attitude. This quality, no doubt, was due in large measure to the closeness of the series' creative staff to the material: the series featured a black woman as producer-director (Allen), another as headwriter (Susan Fales), and several other people of color (male and female) in key creative positions. Few series in the history of television can claim a comparable level of black representation in key decision-making positions.

Nina Mae McKinney was one of the first African-American film stars and one of the first African-Americans to appear on British television. She appeared in over 30 films, more than Lena Horne or Dorothy Dandridge; however, she remains relatively unknown.

Born Nannie Mayme McKinney in Lancaster, South Carolina, McKinney was raised by her grandmother near the estate of Col. LeRoy Sanders, where her family had worked for several generations. When she was 12, her parents who were living in New York, sent for her. At 16, McKinney performed in the chorus line of the Lew Leslies Blackbirds. It was there that director King Vidor cast her in the lead role of Hallelujah!, one of the first all-black films by a major studio.

McKinney originated the stereotype of the “Black Temptress” in the role for Hallelujah! At the time, she was only 17 years old, and the young beauty was given a five-year contract with Metro-Golden-Myers (MGM). During this time, she fell into deep exploitation and oppression common to black women in Hollywood. Unfortunately, McKinney was a leading lady in an industry that had no leading roles for a black woman.

Known for her big, bright eyes and charismatic, full of life personality, McKinney became the first black movie star, sex symbol and recognized beautiful black actress by not only the black community, but also by Hollywood.

The studio, however, seemed reluctant to star her in feature films. In fact, her most notable roles during this period were in films for other studios, including a leading role in Sanders of the River in 1935, where she appears with Paul Robeson.

After MGM cut almost all her scenes in Reckless (1935), she left Hollywood for Europe where she acted and danced, appearing mostly in theatrical shows and cabaret. Billed as the “Black Garbo” (after popular actress Greta Garbo), McKinney was well received by audiences abroad.

She returned to the United States at the start of World War II where she married Jimmy Monroe, a jazz musician. She appeared in many indie films in America including Pie Pie Blackbird with Eubie Blake. After the war, she moved to Athens, Greece, and lived there until she returned to New York in 1960.

On May 3, 1967, McKinney died of a heart attack and the news of her death went unnoticed in the industry and the media at large, except for a small notice in a local paper. In 1978, she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. However, her films are difficult to find.
